Discovering the World Solo: A Journey of Self-Exploration

Updated: Oct 15, 2023

How did the idea of embarking on solo travel come to me? Well, it was a simple yet profound realization. I found myself in a situation where none of my friends or family could accompany me on a journey, and it was then that my family encouraged me and their advice was: "You need to see more of this world, not just the places familiar to you. And if no one is ready to join you, then go solo. The truth is, countless women out there are doing it, and so can you. Step out of your comfort zone."

That awakening was the turning point. I realized that solo travel experiences were not merely a form of leisure but an investment in myself. It was time to break free from the endless scroll through social media, which only served as a distraction. It was time to take action and create genuine experiences. So, with newfound determination, I took the plunge.

My first choice for a solo adventure was a country known for its safety and ease of navigation – Japan. It was a daunting prospect, especially for someone who couldn't even read a map, let alone rely on GPS back then. Throughout my journey, I found myself losing my way every now and then, walking in the opposite direction of my intended sightseeing spot, catching the wrong bus, and boarding the wrong platform, among other mishaps. But the blessing in disguise was that I always managed to find my way back to the safety of my hotel. Challenging? Absolutely.

As the trip unfolded, I began to notice something incredible happening. I told myself, "I can do this," and indeed, I had done it! It became evident that there were certain things I could only learn by setting out on my own. Solo travel was a magnificent journey of self-discovery, a path to understanding what I like; how I feel; and an opportunity to develop my problem-solving skills in the most unconventional ways. It was exhilarating, and my confidence grew stronger with each challenge I overcame.

Now, don't get me wrong – stepping out of your comfort zone can be downright intimidating. It stretches your abilities and often feels like a monumental task, but it's a vital part of the process. One strategy that propelled me forward was taking action immediately. As soon as I decided on a destination, I hopped online and booked my flight ticket right away. It was a commitment I couldn't back out of since I had invested in it.

Following that initial commitment, I delved into thorough research. I meticulously planned my itinerary, figured out how to navigate public transportation in a foreign land, and the best places to buy a local data SIM card to stay connected (let's face it, international data roaming can drain your wallet faster than you can imagine). Accommodation was the final piece of the puzzle, and with so many options available, I effortlessly tailored it to fit my travel plans.

In retrospect, I believe every woman should try a solo trip at least once in her life. It's okay if you end up not enjoying it as much as you'd hoped; at least you gave it a shot and have a unique story to tell. Solo travel is about exploring your inner desires, achieving personal growth, and experiencing the world on your own terms. So, ladies, do your research, pack your bags, step out of your comfort zones, and set forth on an adventure of self-discovery and exploration – the world is waiting for you to leave your mark.
